Popular Nepalese rapper, lyricist, music composer, civil engineer, construction engineer, structural engineer, video director, scriptwriter, and social activist Balendra Shah is the 15th Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, the capital of Nepal. He was elected at the 2022 local election, defeating Sirjana Singh from Nepali Congress. He is popularly known as Balen Shah and is popular among youngsters. Balen designed animal passing in Khata Bardiya for animals to cross the road safely in the forest. He rebuilt more than 2500 houses in the association of ASF Nepal in different districts of Nepal and helped to rebuild more than 175 houses in Nagarjuna Municipality damaged by an earthquake in 2015. His hobbies are singing, learning, playing games, listening to music, writing poems, traveling, etc.

About life and education

Balen Shah was born on April 27, 1990, in Naradevi, Kathmandu, Nepal. He is currently living in Gairigaun, Tinkune, Kathmandu. His birth name is Balendra Shah. His father’s name is Dr. Ram Narayan Shah and his mother is Dhruva Devi Shah. He is the younger child of Dr. Ram Narayan Shah and Dhruva Devi Shah. His mother is also known as Shanti Shah. His father went to Janakpur and later Kathmandu from Mahottari when Dr. Ram Narayan was posted to Naradevi Ayurvedic Hospital in Kathmandu. His father is a Former Managing Director at Singhdurbar Vaidhyakhana, a part-time lecturer, and has also achieved a certificate in Therapeutic Yoga. Balen Shah has a daughter.

He completed his primary school education at Alliance Academy and 10+2 from V.S. Niketan Higher Secondary School. He has done his Bachelor of Engineering in Civil from the White House Institute of Technology and completed his Masters of Technology in Structural Engineering from VTU, Karnataka, India.

Ltd) and Deputy General Manager (Padma Group of Companies). He owns Balen Consulting and Construction Pvt. Ltd.

He has worked in Dolakha, Gorkha, Janakpur, Lamjung, Kavrepalanchowk, Kathmandu, Sindhupalchowk, Udayapur, etc.

Music career

Balen was interested in music, and poetry and released his first single titled “Sadak Balak” while he was in grade nine. He has released several songs Gorkhali Toph, Tathya, Man Yo Udyo, Sabailai Hataar Cha, Baluidan, etc. His song titled “Timi Phool” was a massive hit. You can also see him in RawBarz. It was a Nepali rap league hosted by Yama Buddha. He had a rap battle with rapper Little Grizl. It was considered to be one of the best episodes in the history of RawBarz and he is a winner of the Second Season of Raw Barz. The freestyle rap of the Balen was very popular. His songs are mostly about the socio-economic condition of the country. He expresses the existing problems in Nepal via his rap.

He is also one of the judges of the Hip-hop reality TV show “Nephop ko Shreepech” where there are three judges including Girish. This program is currently being aired on Image Channel and you can also find videos on Youtube.

Political career

He was involved in the “We For Constitution” movement in 2015 and was also interested in participating in Kathmandu’s mayorship in 2017 but later backed down but in 2022 he became the mayor of Kathmandu.

Independent candidate Balen shah (वालेन्द्र साह) got 61767 votes and elected as Mayor of Kathmandu. Shrijana shrestha (सिर्जना श्रेष्ठ) of Nepali congress (नेपाली काँग्रेस) got second position with 38341 votes, Keshab sthapit (केशव स्थापीत) of CPN-UML (नेपाल कम्युनिष्ट पार्टी (एमाले)) got third position with 38117 votes, independent candidate Suman sayami (सुमन सायमी) got fourth position with 13770 votes, Madan das shrestha (मदन दास श्रेष्ठ) from Rastriya prajatantra party (राष्ट्रिय प्रजातन्त्र पार्टी) got 5770 votes and Samikshya bastakota (समिक्षा बास्कोटा) of Bibekshil sajha party (विवेकशील साझा पार्टी) got 647 votes.

Otherwise, the waste will not be collected by Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

06-11-2022 Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Balendra Shah reached the Chhatrapati nisulka chikitsalaya and has monitored the hospital which is the oldest community health institution in Nepal. He inquired about the condition of the hospital and the patients undergoing treatment there and the behavior of the medical staff. After monitoring the hospital he said, “The condition of the hospital was better than what he had heard about. The issue was being discussed in the office yesterday. I found it better when I came here. Education and health should be run as a service, not a trade”.
