Ram Chandra Poudel (रामचन्द्र पौडेल) was born on October 6, 1944, in Satiswara, Tanahun district, Nepal. He is from a Brahmin community. He is a former senior leader of the Nepali Congress, one of the major political parties in Nepal. Poudel has been actively involved in Nepali politics for many years. He was also imprisoned for anti-Panchayat activities. He entered politics at the age of 16.

Education
Ram Chandra Poudel completed his S.L.C. (grade 10) from Nandi Ratri Secondary School in Kathmandu. From 1963 to 1967, he studied Sanskrit literature at the Sanskrit University. In 1970, Poudel completed an M.A. in Nepali literature from Tribhuvan University.
Politics
He started his political journey as a member of the Nepali Congress Party.In 1967, he was elected president of the student union at the Saraswati Campus. In 1968, Poudel was elected as the general secretary of the Democratic Socialist Youth League.
In 1977, he was elected a member of the Nepali Congress Tanahun district committee, and in 1979, he was vice president of the district committee and president in 1980. In 1983, appointed coordinator of the Nepali Congress’s Central Publicity Committee.
Poudel has held various positions within the party and various ministerial positions within the government of Nepal. Poudel has been elected as a Member of Parliament multiple times. In 1991, Poudel was first elected to parliament and served as the Minister for Local Development and Agriculture from 1991 to 1994.
From 1994 to 1999, he served as the speaker of the House of Representatives. He served as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs from 1999 to 2002. Ram Chandra Poudel has been elected as the third president of Nepal since March 13, 2023.
